Backenstos trial and the Edmond Durfee trial; legal papers (affidavits, subpoenas, warrants for arrests, and orders); court transcripts, dealing with the Jacob b. Backenstos murder trial and two other trials; the minutes of a meeting of the citizens of Carthage, Illinois wherein it was resolved to keep peace until the departure of the Mormons, (November 18, 1845). Brayman was born in Buffalo, New York on May 23, 1813. Raised with a Calvinist outlook and a hatred of liquor, he was apprenticed to a printer at the age of 17.
